Public Works Office,
Hongkong, 24th. November, 1897.
"C.0.DESPATCH 147 or 23.7.97 NEW GOVERNMENT OFFICES".
Sir,
1.
I have the honour to report that I have carefully
read the Despatch from the Right Honourable The Secretary of State:
for the Colonies, herewith returned, and other papers connected
therewith, and conclude that the matters on which I am called on
to report are as follows :-
"a". The probable sun to be derived from the sale of
building sites in the resumed area of Taipingshan.
"". The probable amounts to be realized by land sales
on the Praya Reclamation and elsewhere within the next few years.
"e". The extraordinary expenditure on Public Works
which will probably have to be incurred in the Colony within
the next few years, distinguishing that we chargeable to the
loan, and chargeable against General revenue.
2.
With regard to "a", I see no reason why the whole
of the Taipingshan resumed area should not be sold within the next
two years. The best of the sites, comprising an area of 11,475
The Honourable
The Colonial Secretary.
